The University of the Philippines (UP), established in 1908, is the country’s premier state university and a leading institution for higher education. Founded to provide advanced instruction and professional training, it initially opened in Manila with colleges in medicine, arts, law, engineering, and agriculture. Its first president, Murray Simpson Bartlett, envisioned it as a “University for the Filipino.”

After suffering major damage during World War II, UP relocated much of its campus to Diliman in 1948. In the following decades, it became a center for nationalism and student activism, particularly during the First Quarter Storm, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for free thought and social engagement.

UP expanded into a multi-campus system across the Philippines, offering diverse academic programs and establishing numerous research institutes. In 2008, it was officially declared the national university through Republic Act No. 9500.

Today, UP continues to excel in research, education, and public service. It has produced many of the country’s leaders, scientists, and artists, playing a vital role in shaping Philippine society and national identity.

The Batangas State University College of Medicine began its operation in August of academic year 2021-2022.
