The University of the Philippines (UP), established in 1908, is the country’s premier state university and a leading institution for higher education. Founded to provide advanced instruction and professional training, it initially opened in Manila with colleges in medicine, arts, law, engineering, and agriculture. Its first president, Murray Simpson Bartlett, envisioned it as a “University for the Filipino.”

After suffering major damage during World War II, UP relocated much of its campus to Diliman in 1948. In the following decades, it became a center for nationalism and student activism, particularly during the First Quarter Storm, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for free thought and social engagement.

UP expanded into a multi-campus system across the Philippines, offering diverse academic programs and establishing numerous research institutes. In 2008, it was officially declared the national university through Republic Act No. 9500.

Today, UP continues to excel in research, education, and public service. It has produced many of the country’s leaders, scientists, and artists, playing a vital role in shaping Philippine society and national identity.

The Batangas State University College of Medicine began its operation in August of academic year 2021-2022. The plan for its establishment was finalized and approved by the Batangas State University Board of Regents in December 2020. SUDAN

Ahfad University for Women is the direct result of the steadfast vision of two men, Sheik Babiker Badri (1860 – 1954) and Professor Yousif Badri (1912-1995). Sheik Babiker combined the traditional Islamic devotion to learning with his own- then radical -notion of providing secular education in addition to religious instruction for both boys and girls. Babiker Badri established the first secular school for girls in Sudan at Rufa’a in 1907. In 1951, the Ahfad Girls’ Intermediate School was established in Omdurman, and in 1955, his son Yousif Badri established the Ahfad Girls’ Secondary School. Ahfad University College for Women was later founded at the School’s sites in Omdurman in 1966. The Ministry of Education granted the new College the right to confer diploma certificates upon completion of its four-year program.

In 1984, an act of the National Council for Higher Education authorized Ahfad University College for Women to confer Bachelor of Sciences and Bachelor of Arts degrees. In 1995, the President of the Republic signed a decree to elevate the college to University status which was named Ahfad University for Women (AUW).

Egypt

The Faculty of Medicine at Suez Canal University was established as part of a community-oriented institution founded in 1976 to serve the Canal Region and Sinai. The medical faculty itself began in 1977 under the leadership of Zuhair Noaman and Esmat Ezzat, enrolling its first 49 students in 1981, who graduated in 1987. Early on, it gained international recognition by joining a global network of community-oriented medical institutions supported by the World Health Organization.

The faculty has been a pioneer in medical education in Egypt. It introduced the country’s first Department of Family Medicine in 1980 and established a Clinical Skills Laboratory in 1981 to train students safely before patient interaction. It also launched a Medical Education Development Center (1986), a Clinical Epidemiology Unit (1988), and later departments for medical education (2001) and critical care (2003). Its university hospital, opened in 1993, provides extensive healthcare services.

The faculty became the first in Egypt to receive national accreditation in 2010, renewed in 2015. Its vision is to be a leading institution in education and research, while its mission focuses on training skilled, research-oriented doctors who meet community health needs efficiently.

OMAN

The National University of Science & Technology (NU), a private university in the Sultanate of Oman, was established in 2018 after official approval from national education authorities. It was created through the merger of Caledonian College of Engineering and Oman Medical College, both recognized for quality education in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and research. NU’s headquarters are in Muscat, with campuses in Bausher, Sohar, Rustaq, and Al Hail. The university includes five colleges: Engineering, Medicine and Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Advanced Technology, and the International Maritime College Oman, along with a School of Foundation Studies. NU hosts students from more than 33 countries. Its legacy institutions were pioneers in private higher education in Oman, with strong international partnerships including Glasgow Caledonian University and West Virginia University.

Ahfad University for Women is the direct result of the steadfast vision of two men, Sheik Babiker Badri (1860 – 1954) and Professor Yousif Badri (1912-1995). Sheik Babiker combined the traditional Islamic devotion to learning with his own- then radical -notion of providing secular education in addition to religious instruction for both boys and girls. Babiker Badri established the first secular school for girls in Sudan at Rufa’a in 1907. In 1951, the Ahfad Girls’ Intermediate School was established in Omdurman, and in 1955, his son Yousif Badri established the Ahfad Girls’ Secondary School. Ahfad University College for Women was later founded at the School’s sites in Omdurman in 1966. The Ministry of Education granted the new College the right to confer diploma certificates upon completion of its four-year program.

In 1984, an act of the National Council for Higher Education authorized Ahfad University College for Women to confer Bachelor of Sciences and Bachelor of Arts degrees. In 1995, the President of the Republic signed a decree to elevate the college to University status which was named Ahfad University for Women (AUW).
