TUFH Academies are guided by the values that all teach and all learn and we all learn best by doing. TUFH Academies are taught through a combination of theory through lectures and practice through project-based learning applied to the participants’ local environment and community.  Participants demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product applied to their local context.

TUFH Academies’ “secret sauce” is the underlying belief in building a community of educators and leaders who learn from each other as much as they learn from the global experts, and who turn to each other for ideas and resilience.

Equity: Learning opportunities are available and accessible to all regardless of location, their level of education, their role in  health, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, or age.

Collaboration: The creation of a culture for health requires a shift from linear pathways of education to an interlinked ecosystem of stakeholders actively supporting the shift towards the new norm of lifelong learning for the mutual benefit of achieving health goals.

Participation: Faculty and students should actively participate and promote lifelong learning. All participants have a voice to prioritize needs, preferred methods and channels and are enabled to engage in sharing their ideas with each other.

Excellence: Excellence is pursued proactively so that approaches, materials, resources, experts, processes, assessments, evaluations, certifications, accreditation are of the highest quality.

TUFH Academies consist of courses that are either directed to professionals, in both the educational and healthcare field, or to students, more precisly the International Student Training and Exchange Program (iSTEP).

The courses for professionals are targeted for faculty or health systems professionals who want to compliment their clinical training with leadership skills and competencies. As well as to anyone who want to learn from global thought leaders on priority topics and populations.

Student Courses are targeted for undergraduate and graduate students who want to learn with an international student body on non clinical subjects that are related with societal impact.
This is done through the International Training and Student Exchange Program (iSTEP). Member Universities can sign up to participate on an annual basis.

Social Accountability is an approach to addressing inequities in healthcare – the contract that medicine has with society. Boelen and Heck (1995) define the concept of Social Accountability for WHO as: “the obligation of the faculty to direct their education, research and service activities toward addressing the priority health concerns of the community, the region, or nation they have the mandate to serve.”  This definition emphasizes that health professions education institutions should improve on ways to educate medical graduates in the knowledge and skills relevant to their work that will have a positive impact on people’s health and be change agents for a more efficient, equitable, and sustainable health system.

The course aims to improve faculty members’ knowledge and skills, educate leaders in health professions institutions of the social accountability concept, and empower them to lead the change using positive approaches towards achieving Social Accountability within their institutions. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Social Accountability in this course, including designing and implementing, transitioning from theory to practice, evaluating via tools, and critiquing accreditation systems for adherence to Social Accountability principles. In addition, this course offers practical approaches, tools, and methods as utilized by Social Accountability experts worldwide.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs when two or more professionals learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (CAIPE, 2002). IPE is an important teaching strategy that prepares professionals from diverse backgrounds to collaborate and provide team-based people-centred health care. This course titled Interprofessional Education and Team-Based Care helps participants understand the underlying concepts of IPE and team-based care and apply them to their local ecosystem for a final project. The team-based collaborative approach to health care has been shown to improve the quality of care and improve patient safety. Such collaborative practice will require a healthcare professional to exhibit specific competencies that need to be introduced and strengthened during the academic phase of the healthcare professional. At the end of the course, participants will develop a strategy to integrate IPE into the curricula at their respective academic institutions.
