Social Accountability is an approach to addressing inequities in healthcare – the contract that medicine has with society. Boelen and Heck (1995) define the concept of Social Accountability for WHO as: “the obligation of the faculty to direct their education, research and service activities toward addressing the priority health concerns of the community, the region, or nation they have the mandate to serve.” This definition emphasizes that health professions education institutions should improve on ways to educate medical graduates in the knowledge and skills relevant to their work that will have a positive impact on people’s health and be change agents for a more efficient, equitable, and sustainable health system.
The course aims to improve faculty members’ knowledge and skills, educate leaders in health professions institutions of the social accountability concept, and empower them to lead the change using positive approaches towards achieving Social Accountability within their institutions. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Social Accountability in this course, including designing and implementing, transitioning from theory to practice, evaluating via tools, and critiquing accreditation systems for adherence to Social Accountability principles. In addition, this course offers practical approaches, tools, and methods as utilized by Social Accountability experts worldwide.

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs when two or more professionals learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (CAIPE, 2002). IPE is an important teaching strategy that prepares professionals from diverse backgrounds to collaborate and provide team-based people-centred health care. This course titled Interprofessional Education and Team-Based Care helps participants understand the underlying concepts of IPE and team-based care and apply them to their local ecosystem for a final project. The team-based collaborative approach to health care has been shown to improve the quality of care and improve patient safety. Such collaborative practice will require a healthcare professional to exhibit specific competencies that need to be introduced and strengthened during the academic phase of the healthcare professional. At the end of the course, participants will develop a strategy to integrate IPE into the curricula at their respective academic institutions.
